Color expert Pantone has unveiled its color of the year for 2018: Ultra Violet.

Inspired by the mysteries of the cosmos and mindfulness practices, the color specialists have made their annual statement about the color of the year. This year, the company has said that Ultra Violet is the directional shade of 2018. Pantone describes Ultra Violet as a “dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple”.

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, commented:

We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way for what is yet to come.

The annual announcement from Pantone is likely to inspire designers and brands and is a powerful statement about what is trending.

UK daily newspaper, the Guardian, has already curated a selection of fashion pieces inspired by the Ultra Violet announcement.

Meanwhile, online homeware retailer Amara asked a series of interior designers to show how they would style the color.
